One of the best general coverage handheld receiver ever made !

Terry Johnson

This Radio is one of the best general coverage receiver I have ever owned, the audio quality is excellent, and receive sensitivity is good enough that it can be used for HF with the stock antenna when the ham bands are in good shape.

I was looking to buy a Icom R30 to replace my MVT7100 but after reading some of the R30 reviews
found on net I think I will keep the $600.00 in my pocket and just keep using the 7100 for now.

This Radio will not do Trunking or other Digital forms of receive, but it shines on all the analog Freqs,
If you have a chance to buy a working model do so, but remember to check the battery compartment for any leakage, many older Receivers/Scanners that use batteries will get put away in storage for long periods of time.
After you reading this post check your older equipment and pull out the batteries before they start leaking.

Very good scanner

I have two of this model & still think it is a great radio, the back up capacitors fail but these can be easily replaced, my first one I made a common mistake & didnt check the car power polarity & burnt the side of it beyond repair, I now keep the damaged one for repairs.

Versatile and fun

I've owned an MVT-7100 for a few months. I bought it cheap because it was completely deaf, turned out to be a broken antenna soldering (as I hoped and expected). Within 15 minutes I had the rig working again. But this is one of the weaker points of the 7100, they seem to be suffering from mechanical failures from time to time. Not really surprising considering their age.

The 7100 is an excellent VHF/UHF receiver. It also covers HF down to 530 kHz, but accurately tuning to a CW or SSB transmission is beyond the reach of the rig.

Programming the 1000 channels of the 7100 is quite strait forward. The 7100 does not support alpha tags, so you have to remember / guess what you're listening to. Scanning speed is also quite acceptable, and even a notch better than my more modern Icom IC R-5.

All in all the 7100 can be had for fair prices these days, but you should be weary of the mechanical weaknesses. As a backup receiver it's just perfect!
